What Are You Trying To Say?

Image

So my beu sent me a link to a TedTalk (<3) and it was talking about business and how how leaders inspire. I watched the video already realizing that it would continue to inspire me because I enjoy marketing although performance is my being and I think the rules of business can apply to certain aspects of life. In my mind business is just catching up to the more ‘good natured human’ way of doing things, but I’m not really going into my love-hate relationship with business.

Either way Simon Sinek described the reason for success vs failure as a leader is because some companies (and people) “sell what they do and some sell why they do it”. This was the driving idea, but I’d like to take it personally because, let’s face it, I’d rather work on myself to be a great leader so I can extend these habits to those around me, if they choose to accept them as their own.

By selling what we do as people we are being misleading, boastful, and probably annoying.

I mean when you think about it, you can always tell when someone is trying to hard and it doesn’t really match their actions..that’s pretty much what would be happening upon interaction with a ‘This is what I do’ person. I also think it comes with a lack of self confidence. I don’t want to act like I’m not this person one day and not the next… But, being aware of it has already changed my attitude so I allow my actions and accomplishments to color in the lines of my character rather than (in a not so obvious way) declaring who I am at people.

On to being the ‘why I do it’ person or as I like to think of it the ‘What I believe in’ person. I think one of his examples were, “are you a creative person with a desire?” (haha not really but something along these lines) …..we are too, we just happen to make computers… talking about, Apple.  Idk if this is helping or confusing my thought, but in general I think he’s right.

If I know why I want to do something (going deeper than just motives) I can better choose things, jobs, people to be in my life that will share my joy in spreading the love and beauty. I will ultimately be more fulfilled by empathizing instead of just rationalizing.

People are much more sensitive than we recognize. I mean any lady would agree, I think, that guys are more sensitive than they put off. lol. But at the same time our reaction to that vulnerability is what makes us think differently about the levels of sensitivity. Aggressive reactions vs Physically expressive ones. That being said,

I think as people if we sell what we believe in, we are more likely to gain the best things for ourselves.

This is a challenge for the brave! It takes a lot of courage to say what you believe in.

1. It’s letting people so close into who you are.. and what happens if your not accepted for it?

2. refer to number one because I think that’s enough to make this difficult.

HOWEVER!

I think making these kinds of changes will alter the quality of life I live, which is why I am trying to make sure that my actions line up with what I believe, and that my goals and accomplishments help me tell that story.

O man, I just had a little foreflash…. imagine being accepted for who you are and what you believe in?! HOW REWARDING!

But anyway,

These were some questions I was asking myself before watching this video. When I was trying to figure out what my message is as a performer and human being.

What am I trying to say?

What is my motto?

What message is backing my actions?

In short I was asking WHY! Why do I want to help others and perform and create and be a motivational speaker and help kids and advocate smiling and.. you get it.. All of these things are great questions in my mind and now I feel like I’m one step closer to having a clear answer. Even though along the way It may change a little as my interests grow.

It takes time to make an answer simple. And to me, it’s often the simple answers can hold the most information.

Do you know why you do what you do? or the message you want to share with the world?
